Birth Name: Emily Olivia Leah Blunt
Parents are Joanna Mackie, a former theatre actress who now teaches English as a foreign language–and Oliver Blunt, who is a criminal barrister.
As a child, Emily developed a severe stutter. The condition began to dominate her speech from between the ages of 7 and 8–eventually reaching its worst as she was on the cusp of becoming a teenager. Misdiagnosed as a tense child, her parents tried various methods to help her, including relaxation therapy and audio recordings. However, it was one of her teachers, Mr. McHale, who noticed her stutter and how it subsided when she was putting on voices or impersonations with her friends. He suggested she try out for the school play–although initially hesistant to take part, she did–and made it through the entire production without incident. Emily credits her teacher for helping her confidence, and therefore her ability to mentally overcome her stutter by using different methods and tricks. She often speaks publicly at the American Institute for Stuttering Benefit Gala.

I felt I wouldn’t be taken seriously as an actress if I was up on a stage bumping and grinding.”
